HUGE: New Zealand High Court rule vaccine mandate for Police and Defence Force unlawful
The mandate for Police and Defence Force staff has been denied by the High Court.
While the media is busy talking about other things like the war in Ukraine, something big has happened in the country of New Zealand.
They wanted to require all Police and Defence Force staff to be vaccinated or loose their jobs. Some staff were not too happy about this as it violated their Christian beliefs and they decided to take this to the courts.
And now a ruling has come.
The High Court of New Zealand ruled to overturn the vaccine mandates that required Police and Defence Force staff to be vaccinated.
The judge ruled that the rights of the staff were being breached by the mandate under the Bill of Rights Act.
The mandate required that Police and Defence Force staff had to be double vaccinated by March or they would loose their jobs.
A major victory for freedom.
This ruling shows that people cannot be discriminated against for refusing a medical treatment.
"The order limits the right to be free to refuse medical treatment recognized by the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act (including because of its limitation on people's right to remain employed), and it limits the right to manifest religious beliefs for those who decline to be vaccinated..." Justice Cooke said.
Looks like peoples rights and religious freedom is still alive in New Zealand thanks to the High Court.
Although this ruling does not affect other vaccine mandates, a lawyer representing the Police detective who took this to court is pushing for the government to end all mandates and covid passports.
The government is now facing a legal ultimatum by the lawyer representing over 200 uniformed staff to end all mandates and use of covid passport. The lawyer, Matthew Hague, says that otherwise they will pursue further court action.
The senior police officer who took this to court says that his family’s decision to not get the vaccine has made them unable to work, go to restaurants or associate with friends. He says that the reason for not getting vaccinated is because it goes against his Christian beliefs.
And that must be respected. If someone doesn’t want a medical treatment because it goes against their beliefs, that is their right. This is a basic principle of freedom and democracy.
Imagine telling someone two years ago that people would be facing loosing their jobs for their religious beliefs in a Western country. Because that is exactly what was happening here, but the High Court put a stop to it.
This is a major victory for freedom, but it should never have come to this stage to begin with.
